Manuscript Organization

Every manuscript must be organized into the following sections: Title, Abstract, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements (optional), and References. The use of Figures and Tables are strongly encouraged and should be listed at the end of the manuscript complete with figure legends and table headers.

Title Page

The title page should include the title of the manuscript and the names, affiliations, and contact information for all authors.

Abstract

An abstract of no more than 200 words should accompany the manuscript. Please see instructions below on properly including the abstract with your manuscript.

Introduction

A concise introduction that provides appropriate background information for surgeons, radiologists, and residents should be presented. The introduction should be written for clarity and should be engaging to the reader. An expanded introduction may be relevant for critical reviews, case reports, methods papers, technology papers, and editorials.

Materials and Methods

A description of all pertinent materials and methods should be appropriately detailed to permit reproducibility. This section may be condensed for critical reviews, case reports, and technology papers.

Results

A concise and graphical portrayal of the results is strongly encouraged. Appropriate high-resolution images and videos of surgical procedures and radiological images should be included in this section. The data should be appropriately condensed into tables and algorithms.

Discussion

A detailed discussion of all surgical and radiological aspects of the presented material should be included with the manuscript. Key points should be illustrated with images, videos, and tables. A short conclusion should conclude the discussion.

Acknowledgements

Appropriate credit should be given to contributors, financial support, and to other considerations in this section. All named parties may also be required to submit a signed conflict of interest disclosure form.

References

References should be accurate, complete, and pertinent. References within the manuscript should be numbered consecutively using numbers in square brackets. We encourage the use of EndNote.

Conventions

All measurements should be presented using metric units (SI / System International units).

Figures

Figures should be provided as 300 dpi images at 100% scale (i.e. a 4” x 4” image in the article should be 4” x 4” x 300 dpi or greater). Full color, uncompressed TIFF, PNG, or PSD (Photoshop) images are preferred. Vector graphics (i.e. Illustrator, PowerPoint) should be provided in their native format. Any labels or modifications to the original images should be done on separate layers and submitted as a Photoshop (PSD) image. All patient-identifying information and institutional affiliations must be removed. No watermarks are permitted. Figures should be numbered consecutively in the text. You do not need to specify where you would like the figures to be placed. Figure legends and appropriate credits must accompany each figure and can be included at the end of the manuscript in a separate section. It is your responsibility to obtain all figure permissions in writing. Be sure to ask for both digital reproduction and print reproduction permissions. All patient-identifying information should be deleted and must be fully compliant with HIPAA requirements.

Videos

All videos should be provided as compressed 720p AVIs ready for immediate publication. No video editing will be completed and videos will be published as-is. All patient-identifying information and institutional affiliations must be removed. No watermarks are permitted. Videos should be numbered consecutively in the text. Legends and appropriate credits must accompany each figure and can be included at the end of the manuscript in a separate section.

Tables

Tables should be prepared using Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Word and suitable for publication after appropriate formatting by the publisher. Each table should include an appropriate description and an appropriate legend if necessary. Tables should be numbered consecutively.

Digital Submission System

Manuscript Entry

Once you have reviewed the formatting guidelines, click on the "Upload Manuscript" link to the right to begin the manuscript submission process. You will be asked to review the terms of the Author Release. Once you accept these terms, you will be able to upload your manuscript, images, and any relevant multimedia files.

Primary Review

Once you submit your manuscript, it will be entered into the review queue. A Proofreading Editor and Science Writer will evaluate your manuscript to ensure that it complies with our requirements for submission. If there are major deviations, your manuscript will be returned to you with a request to make these changes. If the manuscript is unsuitable for publication in the Journal of Surgical Radiology, it will be deleted from the queue and you will be notified by e-mail. If your manuscript meets our standards, it will be forwarded to an Editor for further evaluation.

Editor Review

An Editor will be selected based on availability and their area of expertise. This Editor will be provided with a copy of your manuscript. They will do an initial evaluation of the manuscript. If it is suitable for publication in the journal, identifying information will be removed and the manuscript sent to one or more reviewers for evaluation. Reviewers will be asked to comment on and make appropriate modifications to your manuscript. These comments will be provided to the Editor, who will evaluate these comments. If the manuscript requires no further modification, it will be sent to the publication queue. If revisions are necessary, you will be contacted to make the appropriate changes. If the Editor or reviewers decide that the manuscript is unsuitable for publication, it will be removed from the publication queue.
